Vatican Museums - The Gallery of the Maps
This gallery shows a collection of 40 topographical maps of the whole of Italy, painted on the walls by friar Ignazio Danti of Perugia, commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII (1572–1585). This gallery is situated at the west side of the Belvedere Courtyard. It is 120 m long. This gallery astonish not only for the maps themselves, but also for the marvellous decorations of the vaulted vaulted ceiling,
created by a group of Mannerist artists (such as Cesare Nebbia and Girolamo Muziano). Let our tour guides tell you aout the tecniques to create such fine work.
